Can be used in mid-air.

Bane of All Evil
Xiao dons the Yaksha Mask that set gods and demons trembling millennia ago.
Yaksha's Mask
• Greatly increases Xiao's jumping ability.
• Increases his attack AoE and attack DMG.
• Converts attack DMG into Anemo DMG, which cannot be overridden by any other elemental infusion.
In this state, Xiao will continuously lose HP.
The effects of this skill end when Xiao leaves the field.
Donning the Mask of the Yaksha, Xiao takes the terrifying, demon-conquering form of the Vigilant Yaksha. But this great power has also brought him great suffering. Some call him "The Bane of All Evil."

Character Details
Xiao may have the appearance of a young man, but his true age is something over two thousand years.

Fortunately, people do not tend to underestimate him on the basis of his appearance — one only needs to spend a short time with Xiao to clarify that he is not someone to be trifled with.

Xiao is a man of few words. He is highly dangerous, and has the most piercing gaze you've ever seen.

He enjoys a formidable reputation and high level of seniority among the adepti, but is relatively unknown in the mortal realm.

This is inevitable. Xiao is not one of those popular deities to whom people pray for wealth and protection, nor is he a mystical sage of Jueyun Karst to whom pilgrims flock in search of divine wisdom.

No... If any mortal witnesses Xiao unleashing his true power, it is certain to be under the direst of circumstances — and they will be extremely lucky if they survive the ordeal.

This is not because Xiao seeks to harm people. Rather, since Xiao wages a constant war against dark forces powerful enough to devour Liyue in its entirety, any bystanders who witness him in the heat of battle are likely to end up as collateral damage.

Not that this is a secret worth going around silencing witnesses for.
Character Story 1
Unlock ConditionUnlocks at Friendship Lv. 2
What exactly is Xiao wrestling with?

The tactful answer would be old grudges, unfulfilled dreams, the lamentations of the vanquished...

The unmitigated truth is that Xiao fights against the remnants of the defeated gods from the Archon War, which took place prior to the rise of The Seven.

Morax defeated those gods and buried their remains beneath the rocks of the earth.

However, gods are immortal. Their consciousness may diminish, but their power and hatred will always remain and spread like poison, relentlessly stirring up chaos for the world and its inhabitants.

Liyue's rulers, who are aware of the truth regarding Xiao, refer to him in his millennia-long experience as the "Bane of All Evil."

The war he fights can never be won, and will never come to an end.

It is also an invisible war that no-one will ever witness or thank him for.
Character Story 2
Unlock ConditionUnlocks at Friendship Lv. 3
Xiao is not this yaksha's true name, but a name given to him in the interests of his own protection.

Back in a younger, more naive time, a god had gotten a hold of Xiao's weakness and forced him to serve as their bloodhound, in which capacity he was forced to perform cruel and violent acts.

Many died at his hand, many hopes were crushed, and he was even forced into devouring his victims' dreams. As much as it pained him to do this, he was helpless to resist.

Finally, on the battlefield of the Archon War, Morax, the Geo Archon, had a fateful encounter with the yaksha's master.

The current state of the world has already revealed the results of that battle.

Rex Lapis liberated the yaksha and gave him the name "Xiao."

"In the fables of another world, the name Xiao is that of a spirit who encountered great suffering and hardship. He endured much suffering, as you have. Use this name from now on."
Character Story 3
Unlock ConditionUnlocks at Friendship Lv. 4
To repay his debt of gratitude to the Geo Archon, Xiao shouldered the burden of protecting Liyue in the millennia that followed.

His past of service under the evil god had rid Xiao of his innocence and gentleness. All that remained within him was the means to kill and the weight of his sins.

The only way he could be of service to mortals was in doing battle.

But what could people do for him in return?

No ordinary person would ever stop to ask such a question. The sight of Xiao, even far off in the distance, was intimidating enough to send people instantly running for their lives.

That said... if ever someone did want to show some appreciation for Xiao, there is perhaps one thing they could try.

There is a certain secret agent of the Qixing who is tasked with supporting Xiao in subduing demons. That secret agent runs a front organization called the Wangshu Inn.

Occasionally, Xiao stops by the inn for a bowl of Almond Tofu, and if you could see the look on his face when he eats it... there's no mistaking it — he clearly loves the stuff.

Nonetheless, it is not the sweet taste that Xiao hankers after. It's the texture he finds irresistible — apparently, it's very similar to that of the dreams he used to devour.

What exactly is Xiao wrestling with?

To those in Liyue's corridors of power, Xiao's battle is against the evil manifestations produced by the remnants of defeated gods.

However, if you asked Xiao the same question, he may well give you an entirely different answer.

Xiao was once enslaved by an evil god and suffered immensely under his rule until finally regaining his freedom at Rex Lapis' hand.

Xiao's powers were highly regarded by the adepti and he seemed to vanquish all manner of evil demons with consummate ease.

But the evil gods also held immense power, and their lust for revenge ran deeper than mere mortals could ever contemplate. Xiao relentlessly slaughtered the endless, impure manifestations of their vengeful souls, but in doing so, he caused them to fracture. Eventually, these fragments of their hatred were able to taint Xiao's own soul.

The only way to eradicate such hatred is to accept the karmic debt it brings. The magnitude of the bad karma Xiao has accumulated over the years is enough to consume flesh, bone, and soul alike.

And yet, Xiao does not feel any hatred. Having lived for over two thousand years, no single karmic debt constitutes anything more than a fleeting memory.

No grudge can last a thousand years, nor is any debt so great that it cannot be paid off in this time.

Xiao has spent many long years alone.

But his battles have never been in vain.

Because ultimately, the one with whom Xiao wrestles is himself.

What does Xiao fight against?

The Traveler understands very well that Xiao fights against the darkness that threatens Liyue. He fights to defends Liyue.

But who will defend him?

There was once when most of Xiao's strength was spent fighting from dusk till dawn, with him emerging victorious by a mere hair.

The reeds in the fields had been sliced to ribbons in the fierce fighting. Plucking his spear from where it had been planted in the ground, Xiao began the trek home.

Well, one says "home" — yet, where did Xiao have to return to? He was merely leaving the battlefield.

Long exhausted, Xiao felt the divine hatred that tainted his body take effect.

Limitless hate flooded his senses, and he fell to the ground in agony.

But it was also at that moment that the pain vanished without warning.

This was not by Xiao's own strength, for he had been rescued by the sound of a flute.

The clear, lovely sound of the flute came over the mountains and rivers, carried on the wind to where he lay.

And clear it continued to ring till the first light of dawn brought with it the startled flight of distant birds.

It protected Xiao, massaging his wild senses, and giving him a moment's peace.

Who was playing this music? Xiao was curious but did not pursue the matter. For he already had something approaching an answer.

The last person who could help him was one of The Seven themselves. So this person, too, must be—
Ode to Windborne Wraith
Unlock ConditionUnlocks at Friendship Lv. 4
A scholar of the Sumeru Academia once did folklore studies in Liyue, the result of which was a book called "Tour of the Land of Liyue," with separate editions being available in Sumeru and Liyue.

"Hidden Diamond and Cloudy Moon: Wonders and Folklores of Liyue" is the version available in Liyue, and has had many mystical and magical portions removed.

The "Ode to Winborne Wraith" is one of the mystical chapters that remain recorded within the complete version at the Academia.

The document mentions that though the yaksha were mighty and upright among the adepti, they were bound by their own karma to suffer great horrors and tribulations. As such, they wandered the land in a state of unending suffering.

The chapter lists many methods of comforting the yaksha, such as food offerings, holy chants, and the like. These would appease the yaksha and help them to continue defending the peace.

As noble warriors among adepti, the yaksha would often descend upon the battlefield in person. However, as conflicts grew over the millennia, they have almost been wiped out. Today, large statues of the yaksha subduing demons remain within Liyue's borders, but they have had their features destroyed.

By the by, the language used in that text was so meandering, and its contents so dense, that it sold far fewer copies than the Teyvat Travel Guide and the international cultural summaries written by El Musk.
Vision
Unlock ConditionUnlocks at Friendship Lv. 6
All adepti are known as the "mighty and illuminated" adepti, and this "illumination" refers to the light of a third "eye" that they possess: a Vision.

But do adepti receive their Visions as a form of acknowledgment from Celestia, like humans do?

Xiao no longer remembers the moment he received his Vision. To humans, this would be an unforgettable event. But for him, this was just the beginning of his endless battle.

The thing that Xiao truly cannot forget is something different.

There are a great many human festivals, and few remember the stories behind them.

The greater part of these days coincide with occasions where man-eating monsters were defeated by the adepti host. People imitated their deeds and staged exorcism rituals to remember their ancient heroism, with these practices eventually evolving into celebratory festivals.

The hatred and residual might of many of the gods defeated by Morax throughout Liyue will sometimes erupt with abnormal force amid their half-awake, half-dreaming state. Among them, the eruption that takes place during the Lantern Rite is the most extreme in scale.

Xiao has his mission to perform the time-honored "Nuo Dance of Evil Conquering," and so he fights night and day during the Lantern Rite. Thus, he has come to hate it.

Now, Xiao did not consider battle dangerous. It was due to his hard work that Liyue was kept safe. People lit their lanterns, and the blessed lights shone across the night sky and the nearshore.

At that moment, another special feeling blossomed in Xiao's heart. Loneliness? Peace? Or was it his fears for the future? The young-seeming adeptus searched his heart, only to find no answers.

Unfortunatly, that’s exactly what they’re doing. Mihoyo can go suck a fat one

  1. Just to let ya’ll know, Xiao might get his own artifact set in 2.4 just like Albedo gets his in 2.3. Thus, I suggest building different characters that complement his play-style. For example, Jean is a great support for healing and anemo shred(C4), Albedos (Turret Build) can do 20k every tick, Zhongli also provides the best shield for him. If ya’ll don’t have those characters then you can replace Jean with Sayu, Albedo can be replaced with Fischl and Zhongli can be replaced with Diona.

I love Xiao, but I don’t see him getting his own artifact set in 2.4. The new def set was released for Itto. Also they just released a new artifact domains in 2.3. What are the odds they give us new artifact domains in back to back patches.

30-40% abyss usage rate. What do you think?

Just look at the guy above suggesting to build different characters to suit his playstyle. That’s the main issue with him, it’s always *you* trying to adjust just to make him viable. It’s not even like he’s destroying abyss. He’s just barely usable with his super limited team compostions. This character doesn’t work with Xiangling, Xingqiu, and scuffed with Bennett. His best support is a Constellation 4 Jean.

Honestly the worst thing and the reason I stopped using him as my main was that I realize if there’s AoE, I should just use Kazuha or Venti. why make my life difficult. I like anemo but I come to accept Xiao as just a niche character

Still can’t believe people are sleeping on this guy(because he doesn’t freeze or vaporize). He has carried me to 36 stars through every single abyss cycle. I highly recommend on rolling him on his rerun if you want a solid dps. With a bit of investment he’s pretty amazing, especially if you have a 5* polearm. If you were thinking about opening your wallet, he doesn’t require constellations to deal good damage(like raiden does) and one of his best supports is sucrose(who has access to TTDS, if you really want a damage boost). C1 is not necessary but very good in terms of boosting your damage and helping with energy regen(which isn’t as big of an issue as people made it out to be; same as the hp drain during ult). Rest of his constellations are rubbish and c6 is whale territory, in which case he is obviously cracked. His kit is also unique and he’s very fun to play. Of course, only consider these factors if you clear abyss. If you like him then he is 100% worth rolling for(as is every other character). Also 2p shimenawa+ 2p glad is the new set i’ve been using with a decent increase in damage so try that out if you don’t have very good viridescent artifacts. You lose a small portion of your E damage but gain plunge damage in return, which is IMO okay for a pre c6 xiao. Let’s hope his rerun banner comes in 2.4 or 2.5!! Good luck on his banner if you plan on rolling.

They are sleeping…and rightly so. There are a lot of reasons why he is not competitive in abyss and his usage is not high. He has a boring playstyle with repetitive pogo jumps. Out of all the anemo 5 stars, he is probably the worst. He can only be in strict team compositions and few of them to boot. Even Jean, who is one of his best supports, is a better pick up than him. He doesn’t work with Bennett or Kazuha who are some of the best supports in the game. He also can’t do any meaningful reactions to boost his damage unlike other DPS.

It always makes me wonder why people think he is AoE monster when characters like Venti and Kazuha, even damn Ganyu, overshadows him by a long shot. The good thing about them though aside from just AoE, is that they actually work in several teams (which will trivialize any sort of AoE dps content), while for Xiao you have to be the one working your team around him. His constellations are not needed like you said, but that’s because they’re absolute garbage. Just look at the poor guy’s C4. Then we have his C6 that doesn’t even activate when fighting bosses. I’ll get one copy of Venti and it will always be better than C6 Xiao any day of the week.

The funny thing after all this is that I have him C6 lvl 90 with R3 PWJS… Don’t be like me.

Your point regarding his boring playstyle is moot. If you want to compare him to the likes of ganyu, who stands completely still and uses a charged attack every 3 seconds from the other side of the room, or hu tao, who does the exact same thing except she dashes, I think that the lines definitely become blurry. Most characters don’t exactly have “fun” kits or playstyles, but the enjoyment is simply derived from personal tastes. Besides, the fun factor is completely irrelevant in abyss, otherwise we wouldn’t have the same characters dominating the charts every cycle. As for the rest, it’s just your opinion. I don’t think he needs bennett or kazuha or any other supports to boost his damage or to have elemental reactions, his damage is fine as is(also the fact that those units, including xingqiu, are very overworked and basically every comp wants them, so having a character who doesn’t need to be babysit by them is a plus in my eyes). I also think it’s unfair to compare Jean and Xiao since they do very different things and fulfill different roles on the team. He does have weaknesses(as he should), including the inflexibility with team comps, but I think you can definitely work around that. And again, the comparison between Venti and Xiao(and with kazuha) is silly for the same reasons. Kazuha and Venti are meant to be flexible and accessible to every team comp that revolves around elements that are not geo and Xiao is just… not that.
I really don’t think he’s as bad as you say, and my xiao is only c0 with an r1 pjw. I’ve never had any issues with his team compared to my 2nd team, where i would have to switch out some of my characters because of enemy shields or res to the element of my main dps. All in all, it comes down to personal preferences and investment. Even if he’s not considered “competitive” in abyss, I still think he’s more than capable of doing his job. So until mhy actually decides to make abyss competitive and tough(by adding more floors instead of the same stupid dps check) I think that he is okay with a bit of investment into his team. I don’t regret pulling for him and i would love to c6 him on his rerun.

He is boring. The entire gameplay revolves under the cycle of rushing energy back and plunging repeatedly until things are dead.

It doesn’t help much that comps are just, whoever can give him energy and shield him is fine. To top all, his artifact sets lack flavor; just boost his atk and elem dmg, all good. There is not much nuance in him; can’t get more boring than that.

Literally, name a character in this game that is objectively and universally fun. We literally only have two to three keys to press (aside from innate game controls) every character of course everyone will have repetitive gameplay. You expect Genshin characters to be like Invoker gameplay in DotA 2? Besides, the most boring character is considered by many to be the “best” DPS character who only requires you to stand and wait every 3 seconds for her charged shots and I dont think anything can be more boring than that, especially since this game is already easy as heck so why bother having characters with skyrocketing numbers that lets you beat content (which is already lacking in this game) with a boring gameplay, not to mention boring characterization like Ganyu. Literally, no one would love Ganyu (cryo-amber ptsd lmao) if she deals Keqing-like damage, but many would still play Keqing even as she is now. Same thing with Xiao, except that he has the numbers to back his awesome characterization.

My guess is that he’ll come after a Ganyu re-run at the least, as Geo characters as a whole don’t have the highest sales Albedo ‘s re-run might come before Xiao’s. Sukunaa and Genshin Report have said to not expect new characters in 2.2 (after Baal and Kokomi patch), so maybe a Ganyu/Albedo re-run then and then a Xiao re-run after? It’s all speculation but we’ll have to wait at least another patch and a half until Xiao comes back.

xiao has the best aoe after ganyu, even then xiao plunges ignore mitachurl shields and will break any kind of abyss mage shield while ganyu needs a strong shield or else every attack no matter how weak will interrupt her, leading to a loss in dps. i have both of them and trust me wo zhongli you will spend most of your time running for your life. with decent investment and deathmatch you will easily hit 25k+ a plunge with xiao and artifact sets dont even matter since he doesnt have a BiS 4p. you dont even need to level his ult past 8 or get cons to get the most out of it whats important is his normal attack for the plunge modifiers. his er problem isnt as big as everyone makes it out to be (basically non-existent with a battery like sucrose), and a single sweet madame will get you back to full health after your ult ends

everyone shitting on xiao here are all idiots who think dps = damage per screenshot. theres a reason why xiao is still top 3 dps. if you do 30k a plunge and you plunge 13 times an ult thats already ~390k raw anemo damage every time you ult assuming you crit every time, even more bc of his A1 passive. its true he doesnt have access to a godly 4p effect like wanderers troupe, blizzard strayer, or crimson witch, nor broken reactions like melt and vaporize, but he is still very very solid and the truth lies in his numbers. but of course, characters are useless and bad if you cant do 10 million damage single hit with them on floor 7, right? but you do you. have fun doing daily commissions with your nuke hu tao build with 7% crit rate and food buffs lmao

(im not shitting on any character btw, im just saying that every character has strengths and weaknesses, and xiao is no different. he is still a very good dps 5 months after his release, especially after considering how he doesn’t have a good 4p set)

i agree with you , sometimes people just like to talk shit about a character they didnt even fully utilize… i got xiao hutao and ganyu … and out of all this 3 i took care of xiao the most just because i like his playstyle with his selfish dps build … and what makes me even lucky is that i manage to pull homa in weapon banner for the 1st time … build him with 2 pair vv and 2 glad… my crit rate manage to go 75% with 235% crit damage with homa….in abyss i pair xiao with john lee , benneto and sucrose/venti… john lee for his shield, any anemo for battery and bennet for heal and to give that extra pump of damage… with this i manage to pull 70k – 100k damage per plunge and you dont even need constellation to make xiao a superb carry for you.. and thanks to him that i manage to 36 star the abyss pretty easily compare to hu tao ( truthfully my hu tao is still work in progress bc the pyro domain really fuck me up )

well maybe that because of homa but still if you manage to pull jade winged that is also okay… after properly observe many xiao playstyle, if you wanna hit 40k+ you must indeed need a 5star polearm(without benet ofc)…..xiao is indeed a dps with high mainteinence but with proper build and enough time, it can be a solid dps for your team . So those who still trashtalk about xiao you can stfu okay.. its not just you who can play genshin properly…just let people do what they want to do and have fun…fucking meta slaves

Xiao remains to be the best consistent DPS ign, even his Constellations are fitting him much especially C6 Xiao is one of the strongest /& funniest cons you can get. And I love it BUT don’t shit on Hu Tao. I have C6 nuke tao and she is the most fun character besides Xiao. And I enjoy nuking enemies with 7% crit rate nuke tao as well as my Xiao carrying me every abyss with no problems. Cryo meta waifus are just boring af, Ayaka is AA Bot with clunky sprint & Ult, Eula is a DPS for screenshots that relies wayyyy to heavy on Ult (fcking easy to mess up) and Ganyu is boring bow CA bot, I don’t get it how people still ship for them, like the half community do. Meta Cryo waifus = bot playstyle

not gonna sht on Hu Tao, but that girl need c1 to be fully useful, i have her at c0 and its just pain in the ass.

Yep. And when are we gonna talk about his E which does 900% at c0. At c6 you can imagine how much damage he does. I also use deathmatch since I have horrible luck for his spear and I do 25k per dash, 75k in full since I have c1 which also lets me comfortably recharge his burst without Sucrose or any anemo unit on my main team. I only wish I could get jade spear since deathmatch base atk is so fking low I have to aim for atk substats too. Or at least lithic spear.

    A suggestion for Xiao’s artifact:
    2-piece set: Cirt dmg+ 24%
4-piece set: When using elemental burst, increase the damage of elemental skill and plunge attack by 30% for 15 seconds

maybe replace the crit damage with atk% to make it more balanced, but the 4pc set doesnt seem too broken

Crit Dmg +24% ? That is way too overpowered because the Berserker which is a Crit Rate artifact is just a 4 star. That would be too OP for a guaranteed CV in a 5 star artifact set bonus.

lmao they’re making an artifact set that grants a plunging bonus, but its useless on xiao because of energy drain

You usually build at least a bit of energy recharge on Xiao.
The energy drain of the new set is 15, which isnt a lot and could probably be granted by a single E, so you could do E -> Q -> gather particles -> E (get full 10 seconds of 50% plunge bonus). If you have any off-field support you could even gather more energy and E again during the last 5 seconds of your burst to get the damage bonus for the whole duration.

The problem with this combo is that you will be in an awkward situation after your burst ends, unless you have someone like sucrose or venti who can refill it almost entirely instantly. But then again, one burst from Xiao is usually enough to end any fight, even in abyss.

It is kinda situational but wont be useless imo.

so about how much recharge would u need on xiao with a battery like venti for example?

ye, the problem is “how I can ult again if it keeps drain my energy?”, and this means that Xiao cannot unleash a single E before having full energy

you realize that each E will take 15 energy? so the second E in you r EQE combo actually makes it worth for him.

also using his E to get the bonus right after Q is impossible as he has no energy and unless he is fighting simple mobs like hlilichurls he cant regenerate enough energy during his Q to get 15 energy and get the buff.

basically this set will be bad for him against bosses and even against mobs, very careful and specific ER management is needed. it might be even impossible without electro MC abilities.

while this set might work in theory its not practical.

Ya’ll need to shut up and sit down. No one character is better than the other. It doesn’t matter if they do more damage, this game is easy and always will be. WHO CARES about whether your fave does whale numbers in their normal attack? Nobody. Just enjoy the game, enjoy the characters and stop shitting on other characters. Shitting on other characters doesn’t make you or your fave better.
