Stories

TitleText
Character DetailsJust exactly when Prune's grudge against the "witch" began, and what it is all about, is a story that remains untold by the many "writs of retribution" that can be found on the noticeboards of Mondstadt.
Ask any Mondstadter about the time they met the so-called "Witch Hunter," and you will likely hear of one of three types of reactions.
Those in the first group would tell you that they offered a kind smile before asking if she wanted a glass of Apple Cider. Those of the second persuasion would merely nod vaguely at her words, then ask where her family was. Finally, there are those like Kaeya, the third kind, who would not only listen to her plans of revenge, but also offer their own suggestions, practicable or otherwise.
To Prune, none of these three kinds of treatment is satisfactory.
Nevertheless, she had long since grown used to these responses. She has come to see that it is the fate of the hunter to be utterly misunderstood — and being treated like a child playing house is something she has to face every day.
The fact is, Prune does stand head and shoulders above her peers, and even some adults, in the sheer breadth of her knowledge. Her speech is clear, careful, and organized, and sometimes punctuated by a random factoid thrown in for good measure. The only real indication that she is still just a child is the look of quiet pride that unfailingly accompanies those little-known facts.
But once you get to know her better, you realize that the breadth of her knowledge and understanding is not exactly matched by a corresponding depth — after all, how much of the profound and important can a child really know? Consequently, the "facts" in her arsenal that she is so proud of are often the very ones that lead to her undoing during a "debate." And every time this happens, she bites her lower lip and retreats expeditiously, though not before muttering, "I'll be back."
But it would be a mistake to dismiss her as simply a little girl trying to act tough because of this.
When she says she will be back, return she will. In situations like this, she invariably shows up again the following day, armed with even more notes, more arguments, and an even more mulish look on her face.
Is this stubbornness of hers the grit required of a true hunter or simply childish petulance? This is a question that perhaps even she is unable to answer. One thing, however, she knows for certain: she will settle her score with that "wicked witch" once and for all, no matter how many tries it takes.
Character Story 1Prune's parents were Mondstadt natives who, seduced by pithy aphorisms like "Life is an open road," ended up traveling the world. They eventually settled in Nod-Krai, a land of chaos and opportunity. This land, teeming with merchants, adventurers, cheats, smugglers, etc., etc., was clearly no place to start a family and bring up a child. Her dad toiled at the docks while her mom worked two jobs at once. Money was tight, and they only made enough to keep Prune fed and warm. Anything else, like spending time with her, was a luxury they could not afford.
Once, on one of those rare occasions that her mother could make it home before dinner, Prune rushed out to meet her, tugging at her clothes in excitement to tell her about a toy seller in town who was selling these really pretty pinwheels from Mondstadt.
But as she held her mother's hands, made rough by hard work, she recalled the ledger hidden in her father's drawer, a book of numbers and letters detailing all they owed, and decided to bite her tongue instead.
"Those things do nothing but spin," she told herself. "Not exactly the most useful things to have around. Besides, I don't even like them. No, I don't like them at all."
She would tell herself things like this all the time.
Whenever she walked by a candy seller, she would tell herself softly, "I stopped eating these long ago. Sugar is bad for the teeth anyway."
And whenever the kids next door showed off a shiny new toy, she would sniff at them, proclaiming their behavior "totally childish."
Over time, without realizing it, young Prune had built a persona of maturity and poise around herself, a high wall of self-protection that would allow no childish longing to slip through.
She learned to heat her own lunches, mend her clothes, and even how to check the household accounts. Once, she absolutely beamed when she discovered that her mother had been shortchanged three days' pay, as it meant she was actually contributing in a "useful" way.
In the evenings, by the time her parents dragged their weary bodies home, Prune was already all washed up and lying in bed. Though she wasn't actually asleep, she knew her father and mother would be heartbroken to learn she was still afraid of the dark and needed them by her side, and she did not want to weigh down their existing burdens with an added layer of guilt.
"I'm no longer a kid," she would tell herself, and this became not just her pet phrase but her very own suit of armor.
* Unlocks at Friendship Lv. 2
Character Story 2Fortunately, there are still several pastimes in this world that do not cost very much, and reading is one of them.
Prune visited Mimisbrunnr Books every day to browse the shelves in silence. The owner didn't mind her being there, for he was far too busy pushing investment coupons on his wealthier customers to care about a little girl. So, left to her own devices, she made those myriad pages her very first window into the world.
She had no real system for picking what to read next; all that mattered was whether the cover or the title caught her eye. She started with the fairy tales with the colorful book jackets, but soon grew tired of the easy tropes and predictable happily-ever-afters. From there, she began to devour anything with text she could lay her hands on. But Nod-Krai wasn't like the libraries of Mondstadt or Sumeru. Instead of grand, curated collections, she found mostly yellowed newspapers or papers with "news" of things that never happened, terribly misleading travel guides, and pirated, poorly translated novels... and plodding historical tomes containing details no child her age was meant to see.
As her reading habit spiraled, Prune gradually became a hoarder of obscure knowledge, a fact she delightedly took as proof of her intellectual superiority. This haphazard collection of out-there facts in her young mind began to frame her understanding of the world in a manner that was complex, yet rather fuzzy, at the same time.
Did she really understand what she was reading? Most of the time, the answer was not really. But she was more than happy to soak up those difficult terms and alien concepts, like someone picking up every shiny seashell in sight on a beach and putting them all into a bag.
Even though she was invited to play with the neighborhood kids a few times, on those occasions, she either failed to hear them because she was lost in her own thoughts, or she spent the time obsessively studying the rules of the game using the vocabulary she had picked up from her books.
"Hold on!" Prune would interject as she raised her hand, "I must check the underlying logic of the game first."
"The Pirates had a real topographical advantage and a sufficient time buffer! They shouldn't have been defeated so quickly, unless the Conch Gang used an undefined Surprise Attack that caused the power-scaling system to fail!"
Slowly, over time, the other kids stopped knocking at her door.
Prune wasn't blind to the other kids drifting away, though she gave a little scoff to show she no longer cared. Besides, there were so many deep questions, complicated principles, and unexplained phenomena in the world waiting for her to apply her intellect and energy to.
She was already on a different path from the others.
* Unlocks at Friendship Lv. 3
Character Story 3It was an afternoon filled with restlessness and tangled thoughts.
Through sheer perseverance, Prune finally managed to finish the first volume of the "Hymns of the Far North" even though an adult had warned her it might be unsuitable for a child her age. Yet, by the time she snapped the book shut, she could hardly remember what she had actually read. All that remained was the sheer weight of those verses, a sense of mental exhaustion, and the loneliness of having no one to talk to about any of it.
And so, in her usual fashion, she began to expound to the empty air about what she had just read. In her mind's eye, she saw a little puppy listening, a creature that material circumstances made impossible for one to actually adopt. Or maybe she was speaking to one of the sages from the book who never said a word in return. She wasn't quite sure whom she was talking to, only that she needed to talk. But this time, the air began to stir, and the friend so alive in her imagination began to take shape before her.
"It's you... You are..."
Oh, how Prune wished to call it by its name! But it was at this juncture that she realized that she had been addressing it by "you" all this time.
It was imperative that the creature be given a name of its own then and there. The common names like "Floofy," "Barky," and "Tiny" were out, since it was clear to her that this was no ordinary fawning puppy. It had a keen intelligence visible in its slightly raised brows and a peculiar depth in the dark pools of its eyes. Its indigo and violet-dappled coat had a sense of mystery and steadiness that Prune found deeply pleasing.
"Descartes," she finally breathed. It was a perfect name, full of the spirit of intellectual inquiry and curiosity, and entirely worthy of a companion of hers. It was a name that also spoke to her own formidable erudition.
Descartes' arrival added quite the burst of color to Prune's daily life, even as it turned her into even more of a... lone ranger.
One afternoon, after the rains had come and gone. Prune was crouching by the street, studying a puddle intently.
"Look, Descartes. Look at how the world is upside down in the puddle. That raises the question: how do we know that we aren't just living in a bigger puddle?"
Several passersby slowed down as they passed, staring at the girl who appeared to be talking to herself.
"Maybe," Prune continued, "what we know as 'real' is just another 'reflection' in a higher dimension. Don't you agree, Descartes?"
She turned towards the air around her and nodded gravely.
"Yes, that's what I think too. So fundamentally, all knowledge is relative, and absolute truth does not exist."
Finally, a kind old lady walked over to her and asked with a touch of concern, "Hey, little girl. Are you... alright? Do you need me to call your family?"
Prune looked up and replied earnestly, "Hey granny. Do you believe that the world is real?"
"..."
"Never mind. That's not a question everyone asks even once in their lifetime anyway," Prune concluded. "Let's go, Descartes. Maybe living in an illusion is just what most adults do."
As she watched the odd little girl leave, the old lady made a sign over her chest and murmured, "May the moon watch over you, my child..."
However, there are corners in Nasha Town's narrow and winding streets and alleys where the light of the moon's blessing simply cannot reach.
And in those cold, solitary corners, the only "blessing" Prune had was Descartes, her silent but ever-faithful companion.
* Unlocks at Friendship Lv. 4
Character Story 4The bored witch, who had been looking for some kind of distraction, finally found a target in the girl buried deep in a giant book by the side of the road.
"Why aren't you playing with those kids over there?"
"I don't like to play." Prune, who was busy reading, didn't even look up.
"What are we looking at?" Alice moved her head to get a better look, and her eyes lit up as if she'd just discovered some kind of treasure.
"A travel guide of some sort. But it's missing some parts because it's a pirated copy. I'm not sure who the writer is..."
"How do you find it?"
"It's okay, I guess. But I can't help feeling that the writer is just incredibly self-absorbed. I also caught some troubling tendencies between the lines."
"Oh?"
From that day on, Alice would "run into" Prune every now and then, always hitting her with the most random of questions like "Does adding sugar to a Hydro Slime make it a sweet drink?" or "If you conquer yourself, do you actually win or lose?"
And each time Alice dropped one of these nonsensical provocations, Prune would rise to the challenge as if the enemy were literally at the gates, and scramble to dismantle these "false propositions" with her impeccable logic in a way that was both clumsy and adorable. Meanwhile, Alice would watch her exertions with chin in hand and a smile on her face, like she was taking in some sort of performance.
Through all of this, the astute Alice also noticed Prune's imaginary friend slowly fading, like a drop of water evaporating in the sunlight.
At first, Prune did not really care for the fact that Alice was a mage. After all, in Nod-Krai, it is not unusual to encounter individuals claiming to be one extraordinary character or another. Even the average guy queuing up for a Feast of the Moon might claim he's a retired master thief. A strange, flamboyant woman in an oversized hat who engaged in mischievous banter? She would totally fit in with the rest of the local personalities.
Little did she know that one day, this cheeky woman would turn into her nemesis...
"Did you just use a non-arithmetic method to prove the relationship between the sides of a triangle? Impressive."
"Excuse me, but that's a problem even a 12-year-old can solve."
"Well, how about we try another problem for 14-year-olds then? Come on, let's see who can solve it first!"
"Don't you have anything better to do than hang out with someone my age? I have to go home for dinner. Let's go, Descartes."
But unfortunately, Descartes had almost faded into nothingness by this point.
Seeing this, Alice immediately threw herself into the role of a stage villain. "Heh heh heh..." she cackled. "I am actually a wicked, wicked witch! And now, I'm snatching away your most precious friend!"
"W—What!?"
"I'm talking about... HIM!" Then, Alice snapped her fingers, and Descartes vanished from Prune's sight.
Quick-witted as Prune usually is, she experienced a rare system crash at this moment.
"What is wrong with you!?" she cried, clutching desperately at Alice. "What did you do to Descartes??? I want my Descartes back!!!"
"Oops, too late~ From now on, you're officially the 'Witch Hunter' appointed by the Great Mage herself! Want to save your imaginary friend? You'll have to beat me first!"
"You call yourself a mage??? That's straight-up witch behavior! Give me back my Descartes now!!!"
"Ha! Just kidding!" Alice was really hitting her stride with that wicked laugh now. "Want your imaginary friend back? Then you'll have to best every mage on the planet! That's right, you'll have to beat them all up, one by one!"
"Go to Mondstadt and find Klee. Who knows, you might just get a clue or two from the world's most adorable little kid."
Then, Alice disappeared with a bang and a poof.
"ALICE!!! YOU BIG, FAT, BADDIE!!!"
And so, poor Prune's long, arduous campaign to save her friend began.

Character Story 5Prune began her "witch-hunting" campaign as soon as she landed in Mondstadt. She put up notices of a rather antagonistic nature everywhere, tried to publicly confront the astrologer Mona (suspected to be the witch known as "B"), and sought out various individuals linked to her targets... But as the setbacks accumulated, she had no choice but to consider even more robust measures.
A rather outrageous idea came to her mind: she'd abduct Klee to force Alice to show herself.
The plan was simple. She would lure her target to somewhere quiet, then perform a thorough interrogation to obtain the intel she needed. Prune even went so far as to map out the operation in her notebook.
But of course, as a "Witch Hunter" with real scruples, she then very quickly ditched the idea.
She came to this decision not because she would also have to contend with Albedo and all of the Knights of Favonius (although it would admittedly be the greatest obstacle), but because in the tug-of-war between reason and impulse, morality eventually triumphed over hate.
"'He who slays the monster invariably becomes one himself,' right? Please, that's such an unoriginal tactic! I would never stoop to doing something so despicable to a child!"
She drew a giant cross over her "operational plan," flipped to a fresh page, and wrote down two words, "Plan B," before staring blankly at her notebook.
The days passed as Prune plotted her next steps, often to the sounds of Klee walking in on her with snacks or a toy in hand.
"Prune, the sun is out today! Let's go catch some Crystalflies!"
"Prune, it's raining today. Let's go jump some puddles with Mini Durin!"
"Prune~~~"
Then, at some point, Prune realized that she had unwittingly become Klee's playmate, and in this role, she was "forced" to doodle on walls with Klee, listen to her introduce the name and personality of every single Dodoco in complete seriousness, and even roll down the grassy slopes of Windrise...
"...I'm just collecting intel for my operation," Prune would say to herself each time.
Finally, after several of these "intelligence-gathering outings," Prune hammered out a truly viable strategy. She was going to obtain the intel she needed by grilling Klee, not by outright interrogation but by disguising the questioning as a game.
The operation would be a simple and straightforward one. Prune would ask the questions, and reward Klee with a freshly baked morsel each time her target provides an answer. She would start with a broad, innocent question, then probe deeper and deeper from there, gradually closing in on the key intel while her target's guard was completely down.
"Klee, have you received any letters from your mom recently?"
"Yeah, yeah. I get letters from her pretty often, and we also talk on the Dodocomm when there aren't any letters. I'd like a chocolate cookie, please."
"So, Klee, are you aware of your mom's atrocities... um... I mean, actions?"
"A toast with cheese...? I don't remember my mom ever making that. That sounds yummy though! It'll be so good with a glass of milk!"
"Is your mom in some kind of strongh— uh, I mean, does she have some kind of secret base?"
"A secret base! I know where it is!"
"Where is it???"
"It's... in the heart! Mom says that the safest secret base for everyone is in their hearts!"
Prune's rewards from an afternoon of "grilling" were seven drawings by Klee, including five on "How to Use a Jumpy Dumpty" and one depicting a Dodoco family. The last, drawn at Klee's insistence, was titled "Prune and Klee Blow Up Fish Together." Additionally, Prune also learned — quite by accident — the exact safe distance to set off a Jumpy Dumpty, though it was also at this point she realized there was serious work to be done if one ever wanted to bring Klee up to speed on the actual definition of the word "safe."
Early evening. Albedo had come to pick up Klee, asking her tenderly if she had a good day.
Klee let out a bright, cheery smile as she patted her bursting-full tummy in total satisfaction.
"Prune's cookies are so yummy! I won't need dinner tonight!"
Meanwhile, Prune was writing up her "After-Action Report: Operation Bake-and-Grill, Round 1" with utter seriousness.
"Usable intel: None. Supplies consumed: 1 bag of flour, 5 bottles of milk, and a substantial amount of chocolate and sugar. NB: Target appears to have an innate talent for counter-interrogation, and there are currently no known methods that can be used to break her."
She paused for a moment before adding another line below in tiny letters. It read:
"That picture of us blowing up fish together isn't too bad, actually. Filed in dossier."

"Witchlure Bell" and "Banehunter Oathhammer"Descartes's "abduction" had plunged Prune into a kind of worry she had never known before.
Like a warrior preparing for imminent action, she shut herself away in her room to review every detail of her confrontations with Alice. Whenever the two of them reached a point where Alice could no longer keep up the debate, the Hexenzirkel mage would suddenly produce a "collector's item" with a beaming smile to reward Prune for her victory.
At first, Prune thought nothing of these "collector's items." Surely they were nothing more than cheap bribes, like the candies adults stuff your face with to stop you from talking.
Then, a piercing doubt struck her: given how powerful mages can be, could a "trifle" from one of them really be nothing more than a toy?
She reached for all the prizes she had won from Alice and laid them out for a thorough assessment. But first, she had to eliminate the obvious distractions: assorted snacks in fancy packaging, stickers with juvenile designs, plush toys with no special functions... Finally, she zeroed in on the two items with the most potential.
The first was a bell of exquisite workmanship. "When the bell rings, a witch might appear," Alice had said rather ambiguously. From this, Prune deduced it was a witch-catcher of some sort. In truth, it was an old tea party bell; the "might" in Alice's claim stemmed from the fact that attendance was never mandatory, leaving it a mystery who — if anyone — would show up. But now that Prune has redefined its purpose, the bell has indeed played a vital role in her adventures. While ringing it never guarantees a witch, it also never fails to bring on some really incredible adventures.
The second item was a heavy, and visually striking, hammer. It was the largest and heaviest of all the prizes Prune had won from Alice, appearing truly formidable and intimidating whenever it was swung. Little did she know that this was actually a sculpting tool Alice had originally planned to give to another mage, Nicole, as a present, though this rather over-the-top gift was subsequently (and politely) rejected by the intended recipient, who said, "My hobby is sculpting, not construction and demolition." As a result, it had been sitting around collecting dust until Alice finally found the perfect excuse to offload it.
These two gifts from the "Dodo-King" were then ceremoniously renamed after some very logical and practical weapon modifications on Prune's part...
... And now, they are known as the "Witchlure Bell" and the "Banehunter Oathhammer."

VisionPrune had once heard it said that "As long as you wish hard enough, the gods will surely cast their eyes upon you." Assuming this was true, all she had to do to obtain the Electro Vision she so very much wanted was to make that wish with all her might.
Prune had plenty of reasons to choose Electro: Pyro was far too fervent, Hydro was too mellow, Geo felt unwieldy, Cryo was a bit haughty, Anemo could be rather capricious, and Dendro leaned toward vivaciousness. Of all the elements, only Electro was cold and swift — the perfect choice to strike down that cunning witch with.
One only has to pause for a moment to realize that none of these "reasons" can really stand up to scrutiny. Maybe, just maybe, the one factor that truly tipped the scales in Electro's favor was the fact that the purple of the Electro Vision would be a perfect match for her carefully curated black-and-heavy-metal wardrobe...
Her goal identified, this extraordinary young scholar-turned-hunter then set out to attain it with a means just as extraordinary: pre-study.
She sat down to read the "Guide to Elemental Power" cover to cover not once, but three times. She committed every detail regarding Electro to memory, and even mentally simulated various "Hunter power combos" with the element in mind.
But she soon found herself stymied when the time came to put her ideas into practice. Her very logical and practical modifications to the Banehunter Oathhammer had made it far too heavy to hold, let alone fight with, even after she modded it further with a longer handle based on the lever principle and attempted to apply a more technical touch to her wielding.
"How in the world did those characters in the books actually manage to lift weapons several times their size...?"
She let out a heavy sigh. Then, suddenly, she recalled the words those fairytale characters used whenever they summoned their powers.
"Oh come on. Only little kids would believe in something like this," she told herself, her lips pulling into a pout.
"But then again... What do I have to lose? How is that any different from making a wish to a god?"
"I've got to snap out of this. This isn't some game of play-pretend..."
"But since no one's around anyway..."
After much internal wrangling, Prune finally steeled herself, and took the leap with flushed cheeks and gritted teeth —
"O Banehunter Oathhammer, you that contain the powers of darkness, reveal your true strength before me! UNLEASH!!!" The words had barely left her lips, her eyes still squeezed shut as she gripped the handle tight. But something astonishing had already happened. That ponderous, unwieldy hammer had become as light as a feather in an instant.
The evidence was undeniable. All the signs pointed to her wish coming true.
"Is... is that it!? Is that all I had to do???"
She stretched out her other hand incredulously. As the elemental energy coalesced in her palm, a light began to glow; so overcome with anticipation was Prune that she closed her eyes and even stopped breathing for a second. A brief moment later, she felt the weight of a Vision fall into her hand. With pure joy, she slowly opened her eyes to take in that purple radiance signifying cold-blooded savagery...
The only thing was — the object sitting in her palm was an Anemo Vision with its characteristic green glow.
It was several moments before Prune could respond to this unexpected development.
"What the—"
Images of the voluminous notes on Electro she had pored over and memorized started flashing through her mind.
She looked up at the skies, her indignation clear. "Hey, whoever's up there: There must be some kind of mistake! I was studying for Electro!!!"
But the rational hunter returned once the initial shock passed. No matter how it looked, this was a Vision, and irrefutable proof of one's strength, alright.
Learning to deal with the unexpected is part and parcel of growing up. Prune gathered herself and quietly gave the Vision a good wipe. "Never mind. I'll just have to study the Anemo chapters again." After all, winners are winners because they make the best of what they've got, and if she's been handed a gust of wind, she'll use that very wind to scatter whatever traps the witch has laid for her.
As she continued to mutter to herself, an almost imperceptible smile appeared on her face.
