Even amid familiar names like Varka, the title "Frontline Suppression Officer" had started to command attention, recognized for both remarkable accomplishments and constant engagement in battle. How could a long-range troop — meant to strike from afar — always find itself at the very front, charging straight into hand-to-hand combat with blades ready? Why would a squad armed with crossbows and muskets follow a young knight wielding only a spear? Such contradictions naturally drew questions, and where questions lingered, debate quickly followed. Some could not hide their irritation: "So because they close in, their ranged attacks suddenly fail? Are crossbows and muskets really that clumsy?" Others spoke in defense, pointing out that archers were already among the strongest and most elite soldiers, and sending the very best of them to the most dangerous front lines was only proper. Yet all argument fell silent in the end, stilled by the accounts the bards had gathered from those who had witnessed it firsthand: "He is the squad's keenest spear, slicing through every line." "He is its strongest shield, turning back every assault..." That said, the bards usually skipped the second half of the knights' comments, since it was too mundane for a heroic tale: "To be honest, Vice Captain Lohen probably just thought this would be the quickest way to get it done..." Yes, his story holds none of the glory and pageantry of chivalric tales, nor the sweeping drama and twists of heroic legends. Spears, hidden arrows, ambushes, poison, surprise attacks, infiltration... He never debates which weapons or tactics are stronger, nor does he consider a fight in terms of glory, shame, or gain and loss. Every method carries its own feel, but the pleasure it brings fades beside victory itself, and pales even more against the raw reality of life endured. Only the last one standing has the right to ponder the meaning of victory. Only the last still feeling pain may speak of survival. Fight. Win. Survive. Over and over, the cycle repeats... | Character Story 1 | In Lohen's memory, the very first toy he ever had was a small, supple bow. His father, always stern and serious, handpicked the finest fir wood and carved the bow, while his mother, precise and deliberate, cut the leather and kneaded it again and again to form the string. Though it was only a toy, his parents followed their usual bowmaking routine, completing it without a single lapse. And yet, his father did not teach him to draw the bow or set an arrow, despite Lohen's hopes. The only thing he was allowed to do was imitate his parents: checking the limbs, oiling the lacquered surface, waxing the string. Over and over, day after day. "Lohen, our ancestors once said: 'A bow is an instrument that demands consistency. For generations, our family has made a living crafting bows. Naturally, we must live like a bow, ensuring that every action we take aligns perfectly.'" Every morning, during their prayers, his parents repeated this lesson. Their days followed steady routines, disciplined labor, and peaceful order. For more than twenty years before Lohen was born, his parents had lived this way, and for more than a decade after his birth, not a single thing had ever disturbed it. From his first babbled words to the moment he could tend bows and arrows with practiced hands, Lohen sensed the course of his life already stretching before him. Perhaps he would follow it until age dimmed his eyes and the grain of the wood blurred beyond recognition, his days quietly consumed by steady, unchanging routine. But arrows, no matter how carefully stored in the armory, are never meant to stay still. So too, Lohen's untamed nature could never be confined to the calm, orderly life. Once again, little Lohen polished the arrowhead again, and in its shine, his eyes with a hidden crimson stared back at him. The arrow lingered, poised for release... And that moment was already near. On an ordinary day, Lohen sat in the cargo wagon as he always did, accompanying his father on the trip to Mondstadt to deliver an order. But today, routine gave way to danger — a group of masked, skilled bandits had marked their cargo. His father shoved Lohen hurriedly into the covered carriage, warning him not to move or make a sound. Then he shouted, trying either to draw the bandits away or to summon the Knights of Favonius from wherever they might be. The wagon was filled with bows and bolts strong enough to pierce stone... His father had the skill of a master archer honed over years of testing... And yet, the bandits subtly tried to coax him away... Despite it all, the long habit of a quiet, orderly life left him so flustered that he didn't question the situation — or think to fight back. The clamor outside the wagon slowly died away, and before long, the curtain was drawn back — but the figures waiting beyond were neither his father, who had scattered the bandits, nor the knights sent to rescue him. Instead, a group of masked men in black robes stood before him. They grabbed Lohen before he could react. Every kick and twist was useless against hands like iron. In that moment, Lohen had no idea whose scheme he had been caught in, or where they were taking him. Little Lohen sat quietly in the cramped, dark cell, simply pondering. Had his father stood against the bandits with his bow, none of this would have happened. And if he himself had been quicker and more alert, maybe he could have found a hiding spot before they got to him. From the next cell, the cries of the other abducted children grew louder. Seizing a brief moment when no one was watching, Lohen slipped a small arrowhead — one he had brought from the wagon — into his sleeve. Perhaps the Anemo Archon had heard the children's desperate cries, or perhaps some unseen force had answered Lohen's silent plea for strength. As the villains hurried to move their captives, the agents of justice finally arrived. Leading the group was a single armored figure, bow in hand, striking with ease. The criminals fell before him. Perhaps to keep them alive for questioning, perhaps to avoid harming the children, he used nothing but blunt arrows in the fight. And yet, in his hands, even blunt arrows carried unstoppable force. Each vibration of the bowstring rang through the air, answered by the heavy thud of a body hitting the ground. The arrows streaked through the air, fierce and radiant, holding little Lohen's gaze captive. Even his hands, poised to move, fell still. Only when Adorno pulled back the curtain of the prison cart and looked at him did Lohen snap back to himself. "If I were as strong as those arrows, these ropes would already be severed. And I wouldn't have had to hear that goof Theodore crying all that time..." That thought quietly took root in little Lohen's heart. But what Adorno saw was something entirely different. Among the cluster of crying children, one boy stood apart — his face cold, showing no trace of fear. | Character Story 2 | Ever since Lohen was rescued, his family watched over him even more closely, fearful of losing him again. But an arrow drawn to the string can never settle back into a life of quiet dust. On a moonlit night, while his parents slept, Lohen quietly slipped out the window. Into the shadows he carried a self-made shortbow, a small carving knife, and a handful of flawed arrows that hadn't passed inspection. Perhaps it was luck, or perhaps he was simply born for battle. When he returned, two hilichurl arrowheads lay in his pack as trophies from his encounter. After that, Lohen started venturing out at night more often. From once a week to every few days, until night after night he disappeared into the darkness. His targets grew stronger, and the spoils he returned with grew richer: shattered masks, ominous scrolls, and the horns of Mitachurls... Gradually, a rumor began to ripple among adventurers. Near Dornman Port at midnight, they said, a small-framed archer could be seen, moving like the wind, slipping into packs of monsters and striking true with every arrow. Victory came again and again, but so did danger. Each encounter sent his heart racing, thrumming like a storm-swollen tide. Somewhere along the way, a question began to stir in his mind: if he faced those attackers again, would things be different? Or would he still be the helpless child, waiting for someone else to come to his rescue? No matter how many dangers he braved, no matter how many arrows tore through their marks, the question lingered, growing heavier in his mind. It would never answer itself. Only striking through that first target could. ... When Lohen finally donned the adventurer's uniform and revealed the truth to his parents, their first reaction was stunned silence, followed quickly by a storm of outrage. It was Master Cyrus, thumping his chest, who calmed the storm, assuring them that Lohen would be the one to bully the monsters, not the other way around. Only then did they begrudgingly accept what could not be undone. ...Perhaps what they came to accept wasn't Lohen's skill as a top-tier adventurer, but the simple truth that he would never again be the obedient child they once knew. Even so, they couldn't bring themselves to give up. For years, they tried to persuade him to stop putting himself in danger, even seeking out Adorno, the veteran knight who had once rescued Lohen, hoping he might be able to talk some sense into the boy. "Once an arrow is drawn, it cannot be recalled. As bowmakers, you should understand that," Adorno said, as if he had long foreseen Lohen's choice. "...But we can still guide it before it leaves the string, point it in the right direction. That is my advice, as an archer." Adorno agreed to speak on their behalf. Lohen's parents never learned the details, but in the months that followed, he seemed to settle down noticeably... supposedly "preparing for exams." Several months later, Lohen suddenly appeared at the Knights of Favonius' selection trials and, displaying overwhelming skill, claimed first place. Though some questioned his methods, he ultimately succeeded in joining their ranks. Well, it wasn't so bad. At least within the Knights, he had a proper position and comrades to watch his back. Far better than wandering alone as an adventurer. Besides, just a few months earlier, Lohen had already grown bored of the Adventurers' Guild commissions and was thinking of leaving Mondstadt in search of far more dangerous prey. His parents comforted each other, but the question of what Adorno had said to make him join the Knights lingered in their minds, leaving them more puzzled the longer they thought about it. ... "...Kid, we've traced who was behind those old kidnappings." Lohen, who had barely paid attention to yet another mediator, suddenly fixed him with a sharp look. "Who was it?" "We'll be issuing an official notice soon, but there's no point in dwelling on revenge," Adorno said calmly. "He's already dead." After a long pause, Lohen spoke again. "Who killed him?" "Suicide." "That kind of person doesn't just kill himself. You know what I'm really asking — who drove him to that point?" Adorno let out a faint smile. "Our Grand Master, the Knight of Boreas... | Character Story 3 | Varka was well accustomed to "copycats." Hot-blooded youths chasing after the shadow of a great hero were nothing unusual. Among them, a few overconfident, highly driven troublemakers were to be expected. But someone like Lohen... that was entirely new. In the past, the most audacious acts of such copycats were little more than surprise attacks, usually intended to prove their own strength. Lohen's debut, however, could only be described as "utterly unrestrained." Hidden arrows, smoke screens, traps, even sedatives capable of bringing monsters down instantly... His techniques were polished to near perfection. They had the precision of a veteran hardened by countless battles, and faintly, they carried echoes of the remnants of Eroch's faction. "Not bad, kid. You've got some skill! But... those little tricks won't work on me!" In an instant, the "young boy" was under Varka's firm control. "The child who faced a kidnapping without panic, perhaps even capable of escaping on his own." "The small archer whispered about in rumors, striking with ruthless precision around Dornman Port." "The hotheaded recruit who, barely enlisted, had already begun hunting down the remnants of Eroch's faction." Varka had heard plenty of stories about Lohen from Adorno. He decided to let this little stunt continue a while longer, curious to see exactly what the boy was truly made of. Under the oppressive shadow of the twin greatswords — blades that could still monsters mid-step — what expression would this novice wear? Awe? Panic? Or something else entirely? Varka held Lohen's eyes. Icy and increasingly piercing, they carried a spark of exhilaration — and perhaps a reflection of the drive to face the strongest and claim glory that Varka could still feel in himself. Promising, yes, but rough and reckless. He needed to take a few hits to understand his limits. Varka acted, subdued the daring newcomer, and decided a few days of confinement would do him good. "Not happy with that? Step up again whenever you like. I'll be keeping an eye on you." "Guess you'll just have to wait and see." Lohen shrugged and smiled faintly as they kept him inside. The day after his confinement ended, Lohen showed up at Varka's door with a bottle of Varka's favorite wine, saying it was his way of apologizing. "Oh? Not bad. You even brought my favorite, Dandelion Wine. Alright, I'll take it." The sharp, bitter liquor barely touched his throat before the Grand Master felt a sudden flicker of dizziness — something was off. Adorno's words after Lohen's confinement came back to him: "Honestly, I wouldn't treat him like your younger self, or just another Mondstadt kid who admires you. Sure, he respects your strength. But if I had to guess, what he's really after is a way to challenge you." "If I'm right, here's what's going through his head: finding a way to test 'the mighty Varka' must be fun in itself. Winning or losing hardly matters. Worst case, he's flat on his back for a couple days. Glory? Don't think that's on his mind at all." With nothing but sheer strength and iron will, Varka righted himself, defying the dizziness as Lohen watched, wide-eyed. "...Unbelievable. By my reckoning, that dose could've taken down a dozen forest boars..." "Kid... I told you, little tricks like that won't work on me!" From that moment on, Lohen saw "strength" in a whole new light — It was the kind that no trap or poison could shake, forged through countless near-death moments and grounded in absolute certainty. From that moment, two new goals went straight onto Lohen's list: First, to take down Varka by any means necessary. | Character Story 4 | The Knights of Favonius are an order with a long and storied history, one that has seen countless heroes rise and endured just as many tragedies. From these legends and hard-won lessons, the Knights have learned a simple truth: Stray from the path of knighthood, and tragedy will follow. It was for this very reason that doubts began to circulate within the order over Lohen's appointment as Vice Captain of the 5th Company. After all, a "madman" who thrived on stirring up trouble, ambushing the Grand Master, and relying on poison and traps in battle hardly seemed like the sort to embody the ideals of knighthood in the eyes of most. Lohen, for his part, paid the whispers no mind. "I know you probably don't worry much about others' feelings. Still, an expedition isn't a one-person job. If no one's backing you, it's obvious your application won't go through unscathed." Adorno paused, as if unsure whether Lohen could handle the situation, or worried that he might make things worse. Ever since Varka announced the unprecedented grand expedition, Lohen had been itching to join. Far-off battlefields and unseen dangers thrilled him far more than any toy. But joining the expedition proved a different kind of challenge. Assessment lists came and went, and his name never appeared. Adorno knew Lohen could handle anything on the battlefield. This, he suspected, was a problem somewhere off the field. Lohen, entirely unconcerned, replied, "Fine. If an 'unorthodox' knight like me can't take the test... then I'll just take the examiner's seat instead." ... "From a practical standpoint, it's not a bad idea. It could also remind the knights of their own shortcomings and quiet those who are always questioning whether the order needs to change... After all, we can't expect every opponent to play by the rules of chivalry." As he flipped through Lohen's rather unconventional "application," Varka considered it carefully. The report laid out a long list of "tests." The usual night raids, traps, and poisons hardly surprised Varka anymore, but these new methods caught his attention. Ambushes in disguise, sabotage of supplies before exercises, and other clever tactics were among the innovations included. At the very end of the report, Lohen casually dropped in a so-called "famous quote," and Varka nearly spat out his drink. "If the Knights of Favonius can't even protect themselves, how can they protect Mondstadt?" — Quoted from the previous Grand Master, on the night he was ambushed. ...Youthful missteps never failed to catch someone off guard. | Character Story 5 | Though he is the most likely to inherit the title of "Benevolent Knight," Lohen is perhaps the least like one in all of the Knights of Favonius. Where most imagine a "Benevolent Knight" saving people from danger, pulling them back from the brink, Lohen seems far more interested in diving headfirst into peril himself — and taking others with him for the ride. Naturally, those "others" are usually his enemies... and not always human. Still, Lohen's unusual "hobbies" weren't without their benefits. When it came to special operations and high-risk missions, he consistently performed far beyond what most expected. As a result, many of the expedition's covert assignments naturally fell to him. One of these was a confidential request from the current head of the Northern Intelligence Network. Intelligence reports indicated that an underground auction house was taking advantage of the current chaos to operate in Nod-Krai.
