Item Story

A spine that holds up the sky.
The true companion of the Anemo Archon never wavered in its desire to protect the land of wind.
This unshakeable resolve sustained the wind dragon through its mortal battle against its vile nemesis.

In olden times, the shadow dragon Durin, covetous of the peace Mondstadt enjoyed, came forth to defile the land.
Durin's black wings blotted out the sky, releasing clouds of toxic fumes,
So much so that even the thousand winds could not hold their pestilence and rot at bay,
And thus fell black rain from the skies, the din of their downpour drowning the cries and groans of the people.
The Anemo Archon was awakened by the sound of their agony, and his heart was pierced by their despair.
So he summoned Dvalin to his side, and shrouding themselves in storm, they pierced through the poisoned skies.

The great dragon plunged in with a cry, tearing a swathe through the noxious nimbus the shadow dragon had created.
Following his wings came a great, swift whirlwind that destroyed those venomous clouds.
Dvalin seized the poisonous dragon in his mighty claws, ascending to heights that even clouds could not fathom.
The poisonous rain had scattered as the clouds had been left behind, and the burning skies became the dragons' battleground.

At last the wind dragon's razor fangs pierced his foe's throat, and his great claws tore out its corrupted heart.
The sinners' creation, filled with eternal regret, fell from the spotless skies and fell to ruin upon a snowy peak.
That fierce battle in the distant skies had thus defended the people of the Anemo Archon.
But at the moment of his triumph, the venomous ichor of his foe had flowed between his teeth and into his guts.

The pain withered bone and marrow, and in his agony the great wind dragon curled up in the depths of an ancient ruin.
...Nursing his wounds, Dvalin still believed that one day, he would be reawakened.
He would again pierce the heavens, scatter the darkness, and sing to the sounds of the lyre of the Anemo Archon, his dear friend.

not sure about this one, that’s only if u dps Thoma on field. But the base atk and ER is good on him tho. But most of his talents and cons are based on his hp so i have mixed feelings, idk

I feel like DPS thoma has some good options, personally I think his best would be vortex vanquisher because he can have a lot of shield uptime + it gives shield strength so he’s getting WGS levels of attack but on a polearm, other options would be this weapon or staff of homa

For anyone wondering, during Baal’s burst the Skyward Spine’s passive procs and the vacuum blade created is also converted to Electro damage.

Beidou burst and Skyward Spine procs on normal/charged attack HITS.

Baal INPUTS normal/charged attacks on her burst but the HITS are counted as burst damage.

I don’t know, it could be but in her burst i cant see the vacum blade If I could see the vacum blade like in normal attacks and see how the damage it does is electro it could be cool and prove your right but there is no animation for the vacum blade in her burst.

Sorry, I wasn’t seeing things right during her animations. Apparently at the moment the vacuum blade does not proc during her burst. However, the Attack Speed buff of the Skyward Spine does actually work during her burst, this was confirmed by Mihoyo.

There are no vacuum blades during Raiden Shogun’s burst attacks since they are counted as Elemental Burst DMG. They also do not work with Beidou’s Elemental Burst

Wow. The ATK speed works, but the vacuum blades don’t on Baal’s burst. Also Xingqiu’s Q works with Baal, but Beidou’s Q doesn’t. There is no consistency here and Mihoyo knows it. Mihoyo is nerfing Baal intentionally cause they are assholes.

The attack spd from the weapon is really good for xiao and also the ER for your Q but the vacuum from the weapon will be non-existence during your burst and the attack spd doesn’t effect your plunging attack. If you’re planning on buying the blackcliff polearm your dps on xiao will increase cause of the crit damage and the passive(against multiple enemies) but since the weapon doesn’t have ER unlike the skyward you have to run another anemo chracter just for the battery for xiao

No. It is not really good on Xiao. Xiao doesn’t suffer as much from energy hunger as people often make it out to be. Skyward spine is only better than blackcliff if you artifacts don’t have any ER substat at all. Xiao does not benefit much from atk spd, so 12% atk speed is nearly useless. His ER sweet spot is about 120-130%, so Skyward Spine is a little overkill. 168 more base atk is nice, 8% crit rate is also welcome, but blackcliff with crit dmg substat will have better dmg output

    “The Catch” vs “Skyward Spine”
Maybe better to make its own post, so here the verdict

I did extensive math and the final result is as follows:
“In general” (with good to great artifacts), Spine is better.

    Spine:
The main hit from Baal’s Q hits slightly harder. In addition, she attacks slightly faster with the attacks, which makes the difference bigger.
And, Spine increases her E DMG pretty decently as well, whereas all the bonus from “The Catch” just doesn’t do anything for her E.
Considered that Baal’s E can be triggered roughly once per second, the additional passive DMG gain for any active character makes Spine the clear winner due to those 3 reasons.
    1. Higher final average damage (considering all parts of the DMG formula)
    2. Higher ATK Speed
    3. Much better DMG from her E

If u have only one of those two, just run with whatever you have.

Btw for anyone saying “The Catch” has higher ER. Yes, but as Baal is today(still Beta), that will contribute to a total of below 1 energy more regenerated.

Wait, if Baals ult-AA is considered as burst bamage, will they benefit from Spine`s passive?
If no, so Spine will be just a stat-stick so as blackcliff weapons

Can’t be sure 100% before release, so take my comment with a grain of salt.

While the damage is considered burst damage, the speed of attacks should be all the same. In my eyes, u are still just auto attacking and not bursting with while her Q is active. Only the damage calculation comes from her Q, not the speed though.

Furthermore, the ATK Speed % of Spine doesn’t even have a limited text saying it only works on auto attacks.

What really happens has to be seen, but I am fairly confident it will apply on Baal’s burst.

I see this as similar to Xiao’s burst. He gets the same damage boost on his Q but the scaling is greater on his plunges. Yet the spine’s swing speed boost still works if he autos in his burst.

i remember it said Baal ult-AA dmg is consider burst dmg but it still AA, similar to how Noele and Xiao burst work, so if the skyward spine work with Xiao and the skyward pride work with Noelle then i think it work with Baal too

baal’s signature weapon is much more efficient than spine, which should be obvious cuz it’s her signature.

She gains an attack increase based on her energy recharge (and it has a high energy recharge substat at 90.) And after she uses her burst (the actual slash, not the sword) she gains more energy recharge which further increases her attack and electro dmg bonus.

I’d personally say aim for c2 baal and then go for the weapon

Dude this weapon was so weak for a 5 star (even worse than some 4 star) but finally it was going to be good on Baal. But now they are giving us “the catch” for free in R5 which makes this weapon obsolete. Its just not acceptable for a 5 star weapon same as the claymore and sword

That’s because your not doing math,

Skyward may have less er but gives atk speed, crit rate and an extra attack worth 80% of your attack at r1 whereas with the catch sure you may get a bit more er% but the passive at r5 is worse than even the stringless’ passive, not only that but base atk of skyward spine is the highest out of all spears, the same as PJWS so no the catch is not better

Actually they are on par. Skyward Spine being better at around 150 ER, with Catch R5 being better at 200+ ER. Calculated by Zanto.

Since it has been leaked that during Raiden’s Mosou Isshin her normal and charged attacks count as elemental burst, which weapon in going to be better for her this one or the catch?

Well the catch is probably her best 4 star weapon by far, But i think if her normal attacks are increased speed why by spine this could be good. Also, Spine’s p[assive crit is always active which is nice, plus the vacum does do good damage.

I think its said that at R1 spine vs R5 catch they are basically equal. I have gotten 4 spines lol, so I think for me I’ll use spine

      Sinply because ER substat.
In 2.0, not only Baal kits leak, but we also got a new artifact set that make ER more valuable than ever. For baal case, she can utilize skyward spine the best, more than xiangling. ER substat that gonna be converted to dmg bonus, 12% more aspd, 8% crit rate, bonus dmg per 2s. Everything in this weapon match perfectly with Baal, except aestethic sector.
